Bats pretty much appear in the fossil record as recognizable, full-on, flying bats. And they show up on all of the continents, except Antarctica, around the same time. So where did bats come from? And which of the many weird features that bats have, showed up first?

Thanks to Ceri Thomas for the early bat illustrations! Check out more of Ceri's paleoart at http://alphynix.tumblr.com

If bats are really related to shrews and hedgehogs, some of which use echolocation, then it might be conceveable that their ancestor allready posessed echolocation. they may have just used it for communication though, and developed flight completely unrelated to echolocation, only later using it to catch insects.

What about the flying foxes? They look like they rely on smell rather than echolocation, which would make sense, being fruit bats, and fruit doesn't need to be chased

Could you do a video on the origin of venom in snakes and other animals? I was thinking about that the other day and wondered how these animals got that trait.

The bat got its wings when his parents died in a dark alley way

I love bats so much

Could you do an episode about Giraffe evolution (and Giraffids in general)?

Bats were my childhood favourite
Ryu Tamo
This is some great info. I have been looking for bat evolution but there isnt enough material
Graeme Lastname
There are bats that don't echo locate. Have they lost the ability or did they never have it? 🗝 🇦🇺

You gotta love science, you do!

Ok but when did bats evolve to be so freaking adorable?
cosmosofinfinity
As for which evolved first, flight or echolocation... Is it known if the body evolves faster than the mind? Because if so, I would definitely put my bets on flight evolving first.

I'd love to see a video about earthworms

I'm just frustrated that bats didn't pick on the quadrupedal, wing finger trick the pterosaurs had. That way, they wouldn't have to hang upside down and could get about on the ground a lot easier......
Ellie Ernsteen
can you do a vid on the evolution of intelligence, and another on the evolution of platypuses?
Robert PuKeyRay
I think they started as aquatic mammals and had fins instead of wings. Also having echolocation from their whale/dolphin heritage. And dolphins would hangout by the shore. Maybe they where small and ate bugs in a river?
Lavaughn Ankle
Hey PBS eons I have a topic for you. Why did mega mammals got so big. And the end of their reign
Dakotaraptor
Bats appearing right after the K-Pg Extinction makes sense since the small pterosaurs that were around were now gone. This left the niche to be filled by the proto-bats.

Over 600 million years ago, sheets of ice coated our planet on both land and sea. How did this happen? And most importantly for us, why did the planet eventually thaw again? The evidence for Snowball Earth is written on every continent today.

Thanks to Julio Lacerda and Franz Anthony from Studio 252mya for their wonderful illustrations. You can find more of their work here: https://252mya.com/

Special thanks to Judy Pu for answering our questions about Snowball Earth.
