More than 90 cities across the United States have committed to run on 100% renewable energy, but how does a city go 100% renewable? Find out on this episode of One Small Step.

More than 70% of global CO2 emissions come from cities and if more cities made the switch to 100% renewable energy utilizing solar energy, wind power, hydropower, and more, it could have a major impact on our climate change goals.

In this episode of One Small Step, Lucy talks with New York state activists as they lobby their representatives to commit to a renewable energy agenda and visits St. Petersburg, Florida to talk with the mayor and learn how a bunch of volunteers convinced the city to commit to a 100% renewable energy approach and more sustainable lifestyle.

Renewable energy is energy that is made from natural processes that don't run out, like wind or solar power, unlike fossil fuels, like oil and coal, that exist on Earth and also produce harmful greenhouse gases like CO2 and methane.

Renewable energy has an almost non-existent carbon footprint, which is one of many benefits to making the switch. It's clean so it reduces air pollution, and the investment in a renewable energy infrastructure creates new jobs in the solar and wind energy industries.

Right now, 6 U.S. cities run on solely renewable energy, with more and more following suit in an attempt to live a more sustainable life and reach our climate change goals.

Love the push for 100% renewable cities but I don’t understand. How can a city be 100% clean energy if there are still people driving internal combustion engines and heating their homes with oil? Does someone know the answer? Is it a technicality? Or are they saying the city is 100% clean electricity?

Solar's PV pricing is dropping like a rock. Its literally dropped 10x in 10 years. If you wait another 10 years it will likely do it again, except this time cities will be able to have batteries. Because right now its too expensive to store. TBH the reason why cities are taking this on is because the free market made the technology drop and they are actually saving money by year 2.5 years instead of an ROI 15 years. So while this is a good thing, everyone will be dumping their solar panels for new ones. If you really want to make a difference is to have better way to recycle the old solar panels.

We can have UNLIMITED energy bc of the wind and sun

Why is the process so slooow!! Surely all cities should be doing this already? It's a step in the right direction however much more can be achieved in a short space of time.

Great job Lucy! :)

Great! I think you could go even faster 100% green. :)

There are so many intractable engineering and environmental problems with our current wind and solar generation technologies that I believe the environmental ideologues will have no choice but to embrace generation III+ and IV nuclear generation technologies to achieve their aims. I wish they would get on with it.

American Republicans put fear and greed (fear) before people and our one shared planet every single time. They've lost their minds to fear.

Every residential, business and covered parking rooftop should be covered in enough solar panels to make them 100% solar powered, including charging our electric vehicles.

Greta Thunberg is a 16-year-old activist who has ignited a global youth-led environmental movement to fight climate change — we sat down with Greta to hear about her journey and to find out where we go next.

In August 2018, then 15-year-old Greta Thunberg skipped class to protest in front of the Swedish parliament to raise awareness about climate change, holding a sign that read "Skolstrejk för Klimatet." Since then, she's continued to strike on Fridays (which became Global Climate Strikes), she's delivered blunt speeches on the world stage, and she's ignited a global youth-led movement to fight climate change.

Greta Thunberg's protest began with a tweet from @GretaThunberg:

"Vi barn gör ju oftast inte som ni säger åt oss att göra, vi gör som ni gör. Och eftersom ni vuxna skiter i min framtid, så gör jag det med.
Jag skolstrejkar för klimatet fram till valdagen."

Which, translated in English, reads:

"We children usually don't do as you tell us to do, we do as you do. And if you adults don't care about my future, neither do I. I will school strike for the climate until election day."

In one Greta Thunberg speech, she says, "We have come here to let you know that change is coming, whether you like it or not. The real power belongs to the people."

In this Greta Thunberg interview, One Small Step host Lucy Biggers chats with the young activist to discuss Thunberg's experience starting a global environmental movement and to talk about what other ways we can all work towards combating climate change as we move forward into the future.
