Thanks for a terrific 2 years everyone. I'm releasing this video as part of the celebration, it was one of the first videos I ever made almost 2 years ago so please be kind. It profiles the fight between HD DVDs and Blu-rays in their attempt to become the primary media format.

Now HD DVD must use time travel to retrieve the infinity stones and stop Blu Ray

Bro I had Both I had a PS3 and the Xbox 360 add-on HD-DVD player so even though I took a hit after it was over I never really lost!... Mainly since the add-on came with the 360 Remote Control which was I believe $25 at the time separately Now I'm on to 4K Blu-Ray LMAO!

DVD is digital versatile disc, not digital video disc. I know it's a small detail but how many more small details did he get wrong?

I mean maybe it's just me but I think at this point Blu-Ray is more popular than DVD. I can't convince myself to buy something in a lower resolution than what's available on streams, it's just counter-intuitive. However, I've noticed some TV shows like Family Guy, One Piece, Naruto, and Key & Peele only have DVDs on shelf at Best Buy, so maybe I'm wrong and only like Blu-Rays more because I'm nerdy.
4K Blu-Rays are a whole different package on the other hand. On one hand I think it defeats DVDs by leagues whereas Blu-Rays only slightly bested them. But at the same time, they only barely best Blu-Rays. Even by the time 4K Blu-Rays are more affordable, I can't imagine anyone over the age of 35 being able to tell the difference between Blu-Rays and 4K.

all 6 infinity stones lol
raph is me
beta max, video8, hi8, minidisc, DAT, UMD; after all those "failures" Sony finally got it right with the blu-ray
Red Lantern's Rage
on the PS3, they got some of their customers back near the end of the cycle as better games were coming out and they started hitting their stride.....
they got even more back plus some CBOX fans for PS4 when X1 fumbled so hard at launch....
on the technical side, the PS3 was great cus it played not just Blue Ray discs but DVD & CD as well as data MP3 discs making it's capabilities pretty impressive...still the CPU was pretty bad and hurt games development in a lot of ways, thankfully the PS4 doesn't suffer in the same way having similar architecture as PC's....

Why would you say HD DVD players are worthless when they still play DVDs and HD DVDs?
surject
1. DVD = Digital Versatile Disc (as many wrote already)
2. DVD with movies on were/are Duallayer, hence 8.5GB, not 4.7GB. Flipper Discs are 9.4GB and combined (DVD-18) are 17GB but rare.
3. BluRay also won thanks to the P0RN industry
4. HDDVD was the much more technically advanced format! Much easier to author and much better features (interactive menus, PiP, bookmarks, games!). Just compare the T2 HDDVD with the BluRay release... In the beginning BluRay also sucked in wasting its extra space with uncompressed audio (or DTS/DD) and MPEG-2. Back then I really hoped HDDVD is gonna win...

My problem with Blu-ray is that there are too many damn codecs.

I wish you would have included the super blu player by LG... it played both HDDvd and Blu-ray...and dvd of course. I started my collection with HDDvd because the name was better like you mentioned, in 2007ish you had to have HD, so that’s what I got lol. It’s crazy that the superblu technology didn’t become relevant because then it wouldn’t matter what format movies were released in, but I guess Sony was just too big? But like you said, bluray hasn’t exactly been the wave of the future and even though I have the capability to play any type of video disc, I mostly buy dvd’s Again lol
PSNDemonwing
Blue ray has 25gb of memory,
HDDVD has 15 gb of memory,
IS THE CHOICE NOT OBVIOUS? I thoroughly enjoyed the video, great explanation of important details, but the most important fact is that these companies picked blue ray for a huge reason

I was at MGM/Sony when this went down. An interesting story and I’ll try and give you the elevator pitch version. It goes back to the VHS/Beta war in the 80s that Sony lost. And they were bound and determined that they wouldn’t loose the Bliueray war. What they learned from the 80s was that content is king. The format will the most titles wins. And back in the 2000s MGM had by far the most titles of any studio. By a wide margin. So Sony decided to buy MGM. But they didn’t have the cash to buy it outright. So they formed a consortium w/ 4 investment banks, bought MGM and all of the sudden Blueray content dwarfed HD DVD. Since Sony was a movie studio and the banks weren’t, Sony was allowed to have day-to-day control of MGM and they began integrating MGM departments into Sony. And that’s when the trouble started. Basically, you had Sony departments already up to their ears getting a big pile of MGM dumped on their desks. The MGM projects naturally got neglected. It got so bad, that MGM cash cows like Stargate started loosing money. And I was told Barbara Broccoli did not get along w/ Sony management like she had w/ MGM. Finally, the investment banks saw they weren’t getting a return on investment like Sony had promised and sued Sony. Sony turned around and sued the due diligence company they hired when they bought MGM. Sony lost both suits. The investment banks took control of MGM away from Sony. But the merger had eviserated MGM. So the banks cut a deal w/ FOX to take over MGM’s valuable Home Entertainment assets. Remember, MGM hasn’t actually made a movie in decades. They’re a distribution company. But Sony was able to use that content to win the Blueray war. Just in time for streaming to hit its stride. So, a Pyric victory.

HD-DVD did make it past 2 years in US it came out 4/2006 the last movie to come on the format came out 6/2008

I was a huge supporter of HD DVD 📀 mainly because they had combo discs (DVD on one side, HD DVD on other side), Transformers from Paramount, and the name makes MUCH more sense than Blu-Ray.

Techies generally can’t see the world beyond their front door but the biggest question is- with the cost of HD DVD being less to manufacture, would DVD’s eventually have been completely replaced by HD DVD combo discs?

Sony f**ked the market overall for the right of a format and allowed digital to take off sooner than it should’ve by keeping prices high.

Where I'm from HD DVD was everything I never watched a blue ray in my life
abigguitar
I owned the HD-DVD add-on for the 360 and a few HD-DVDs. There's nothing that makes HD-DVD obsolete other than if you get rid of the equipment used to play them. The HD-DVDs and players still function and the movies are watchable. Of course, there will be no more HD-DVDs made, but that doesn't mean someone's library of discs is useless. At least HD-DVD is a better situation than Best Buy's DIVX format. Once DIVX died, you could no longer play the discs you bought as that technology relied on a periodic license validation dial-home feature which stopped working when the service was shut down.

once sony acquired all six infinity studios they snapped all hd dvd players out of existence

I recently got a Blu Ray and DVD player for my computer and I can watch them on my 1080 screen and the Blu Rays are hella nice I’m glad I made the investment.

Quiznos has fallen on some hard times. It's gone from 5,000 locations to 800 in a little over a decade. This video attempts to explain what happened.
