Sailing La Vagabonde
Ever thought about renewable energy on a boat? We hope you are following along with our "Sailing Basics Guide" https://www.sailing-lavagabonde.com/guide
In this video we do a quick "energy budget" and discuss lithium batteries, solar power, hydro generators and what we have learned about minimising our day to day output. This leads onto what this has taught us about trying to consume less in general having lived on the ocean for the last 5 years.

Excellent! QUESTION - If you had a medium to smaller AC unit (say 12,000 to 14,000 BTUs), and ran it only 3 or 4 hours per day (during the super hot period), can you "guestimate" how many Amps that would take - Trying to figure out what addition solar and hydro power would be required to "have it all" so to speak.

Can you guys fit some more solar panels? Maybe on the roof?

Amps don't mean much without voltage, we need kwh

loved how you covered renewable energy and made such a funny video! well done guys, only found your channel recently and think your both brilliant!!!! love your channel keep up the amazing work you do, hopefully will be able to persuade my girl to do this with me one day x

tip top results on resource management. One thing that kills me but probably doesn't apply in the tropics is wasted water waiting for washing up water . shower etc to run hot. Guess you can collect it to wash the boat down?

What about elect. Baby toys?

Don't use headphones for 8 hours a day! or use airtube.

Hi guys, love the episodes you're making. So you guys have solar and water energy, but what about wind energy? Seeing as you only use the water energy whilst sailing and you can use the wind energy whilst on anchor. Love to hear your thoughts on the subject. Regards Artur

Hey guys, thanks for all the amazing adventures you take us on. Was wondering what a bad weather day looks like on La Vaga... Having to go about necessary chores braving the weather and just passing time? What do you think? Also I remember Eleyna mentioning her phone the other day which made me think, how do you guys manage that? Having a permanent phone number travelling around? Anyhoo thought I'd say hi and ask. Cheerio! Can't wait to see more... Spearfishing! Hehe ciao ciao

An EXCELLENT additional alternative would be to purchase Alternators for each of your engines from Kent in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with approximately 250 Amps per hour they generate. This way, you could charge up your battery bank in very little time with very little fuel. Would be nice to have that as a back-up. Especially, if you had guests on board. But seriously, having it as a back-up would be nice. Even if you only got one for one of your motors. They are expensive.

why dont you get a 12v charger for the laptop. Way more efficient than using the inverter.
Jonathan Bresler
Thank you for the insight into your electrical systems. What voltage battery banks are you using? 12V? 24V? Are all the items that you power the same voltage? Nigel Calder wrote a wonderful book about all this and much more. Its
Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems
. https://www.amazon.com/Boatowners-Mechanical-Electrical-Manual-Essential/dp/0071432388 . Heavy reading, but worth it when your out there away from others and all issues that arise are yours and yours alone. Fair winds!

Interesting video, guys. I liked the comparison of energy budgets at anchor and on passage.
With my pedant hat on, can I point out that “amps” is the current flowing at any instant; “amp-hours” is the amount of energy you use.
Also the symbol for amp-hours is Ah, not aH. Here endth the lesson.
Keep up the good work 😊

to save with your laptop, switch out your hard drives to solid state ones, they use less power than the spinners, that and use a lower screen brightness and when you walk away from the laptop, put it into sleep mode or power off. a computer with a solid state drive boots real fast. and if you can get one, get a dc power cord for your laptop, inverters waste a lot of efficiency.

And I think you did a good job explaining amp hours without making it full of information that people won't understand.

looking for a 12v charger for my macbook. Somebody using a good one? recommendations? thx
Goblin King
Don't know why I'm watching this because I don't sail neither do I count on doing so, but really interesting understanding about renewable energy and conserving energy and how to gain / lose.
CaptainMcLachs
Ever thought about a wind turbine as well? That way on anchor you use wind and solar not just solar.

I think your numbers are a little off, led lighting and phone chargers draw very little power , restive loads ran through an inverter ( hair dryers, electric skillets, heaters , water makers) draw large amounts of power. But in the end , if you batteries are not going dead you must be doing it right . Take care and don’t put your tongue on the wire to see if it’s got juice . 😉 !

Having snuck into our spot at high tide it seemed far less treacherous than when it dropped later that afternoon and we were completely surrounded by coral reef. I would get up on deck and have a look around and just slowly shake my head every half an hour or so. We decided to tie off the stern to a mooring ball so as to be held in place and were able to ride out the night without one of the Bahamian famous squalls. The next day the weather had picked up making our anchorage less and less comfortable so we decided to leave before the next high tide and so I decided to drag along beside the boat until the worst of the reef had been passed.
