A Gambian truth and reconciliation commission began its first hearing this month to look into alleged human rights abuses that occurred during the 22-year rule of Yahya Jammeh.

Between 1994 and 2016, Jammeh allegedly oversaw gross human rights violations including witch hunts, torture, enforced disappearances, and sexual violence. Many atrocities are said to have been committed by his own paramilitary hit squad. Jammeh was known as an eccentric leader who also subjected Gambians to fraudulent treatments for HIV/AIDS.

Hearings for the Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) will feature testimony from victims, witnesses and alleged perpetrators. The commission will decide compensation for victims and recommend cases for further prosecution.

This month marks two years since Jammeh fled from The Gambia after refusing to concede defeat in a 2016 presidential election. He has been living in exile in Equatorial Guinea, where he is being protected from extradition. Since his departure, some aspects of Gambian civil society, including the return of a free press, have improved. But the country is still struggling economically and many young people are considering leaving.

In this episode, we'll discuss what a truth, reconciliation and reparations commission could achieve in The Gambia and how the country has changed under new leadership.

Why are we Gambians still digging the past?? Gambia should just let the past and focus on how to build a better Gambia. Past has past, nothing can change it and besides that, Gambia is far behind in team of development. Gambia government please help Gambia go forward.

*This is just so pathetic. This just goes to show how Jammeh manipulated and preyed on the minds of (innocent/uninnocent) Gambian citizens. Instead of working together as a country and try to perfectly execute a better government, a lot of people are still here crying over the loss of a dictator. This makes it seem like all Gambian's are weak minded, and I can guarantee you all that majority of us aren't all like that. We are crumbling as a nation and dividing as union, which is so sad. As of 2018, The Gambia took the 9th position for being 1 of the top 10 poorest countries in the world. The Gambia needs to strive for upward mobility, but some people make it seem like downward mobility will forever be The Gambia's destiny. I use to think that all African leaders were corrupt, until it hit me about a few days ago. I realized that a lot of us citizens are responsible for the 60% cause of corruption in our own nations... because “WE” tend to re-elect these so called "leaders" over and over again. “WE” always give into their sweet words until the leaders **-feel like-** know that they unbreakable/unstoppable. This why African leaders get so violent whenever a new person rises up to challenge their authority. I'm not trying to sound so redundant, but we give them the door way to dictatorship if your think about it. Change doesn't happen overnight; it takes a long time for change to occur. I believe that with the right attitude, we'll see that change.*

Trrc all is a lie

Jailed without trial is more in the present regime than the Jammeh . The on going government has victimized more than four families in the Gambia .
If the victims of Jammeh's regime is compensated then they should consider the victim of their own acts .
Haruna Jatta and the Faraba incident .The nine NIA and the WhatsApp group are jailed four two years without a sentence .
Are we seriously looking for the truth or sellective justice .
Lamin Conteh
Jammeh must face justice, because the victims needs justice?
Mo Jagne
I said from day one that this commission will serve no purpose other than to divert focus from more pressing and immediate issues.

We all know what happened under Jammeh and already signs of the psycophancy that led to that are beginning to emerge in this government as evidenced by the increasing influence of the president's youth movement among other things.

Jammeh was a dictator but this idea of him as a cannibal and gambians being traumatised is oversensationalised because that never has been the case and that nullifies the very existence of this commission.
Patrick Tiger Mendy
jammeh is better president for Gambian ok
mamadou Baldeh
you people are very stupid
Pa Abdou Jagne
That's true Adama Barrow is just a big disappointment to Gambian he is following the same footsteps of Jammeh, he is pretending to be someone that he's not even close to. He brings tribalism to the Gambia, corruption, lack of transparency and sending false information to the world
Trouble Child
Although barrow is no better, but jammeh must be brought to justice
mohamed bah
Jammeh to justice
